Office Hours Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 11:30-12:15 p.m.
Class Goals
1. Learn to value mathematics and appreciate the role it plays in development of our society.
2. Become confident in one’s own ability.
3. Become a mathematical problem solver. The development on each student’s ability to solve problems is essential if he or she is to be a contributing member of society.
4. Learn to communicate mathematically.
5. Learn to reason mathematically. Making conjectures, gathering evidence, and building an argument to support notions are fundamental to doing mathematics.
6. Provide challenge to each student at their individual level.
7. Understand the fundamental concepts of material covered in this course and be able to demonstrate your knowledge through projects and assessments.

Challenge Options
The content and pace of this course is demanding. However, I will address students on an individual level. If you are ready to be working at a faster pace than the class, many different options are available from independent learning to group work. In each case, I encourage you to talk to me so we can determine a plan of action that will best meet your needs.
Class Materials
Please bring the following to class everyday:
1. Laboratory Notebook (one with graphing paper is preferred)
2. Pencils (more than one in case it breaks) and pens of a few colors
3. Daily Planner
4. Calculators will be extremely helpful and I encourage you to purchase your own. One such as a TI-84 will be useful throughout your high school and college career
5. Your brain, ready to learn!
Books
We have class copies of McDougal Littell Algebra 1 text books that we will be using both in class, and for assigned work. We also will be working on a project this year, so there will be additional books/handouts and online access. It’s important for you to keep all handouts and class notes organized within your binder.
Grading
You will be graded on completing large scale projects, mini-projects, homework, and assessments. We will have short skill assessments at the end of each new topic in order to identify strengths and weaknesses. Homework will also be assigned on each topic. Homework may vary from daily assignments to a packet of work to be accomplished over a specified time period. All homework will be collected at the beginning of class on the due date. Late assignments will lose 50%. After two days past the due date, assignments will no longer be accepted. The only way around this is if an arrangement is made before the due date. Do not come to me after the fact!!
The Rules
Everyone in the classroom is expected to behave in a respectful manner at all times in order to ensure that everyone has a positive and safe environment in which to learn. Respectful behavior includes:
- Listening to others | - Tolerating differences |
- Working cooperatively | - Being honest |
- Being prepared | - Staying on task |
- Keeping cell phones off and put away | - Contributing positively |
